Tesla is making great progress, demonstrating FSD in Europe and Australia, using FSD Unsupervised in Giga Berlin, and achieving 5-star safety ratings for its cars. Welcome to the weekly news roundup with Jowua.
Tesla Mystery Cars
A recent drone flyby by Joe Tegtmeyer over Giga Texas has once again yielded new interesting sightings. He spotted two cars with their front and back covered. They resembled the Model Y in appearance, which immediately hinted that these could be test mules of the new Model Y Performance. At the moment, the updated Model Y is only available in Long Range Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range All Wheel Drive (AWD) variants.
However, other rumors have also emerged. Some enthusiasts have noted that this could also be a new, affordable Tesla model. During the Q1 2025 earnings call, Tesla VP of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy said that “models that come out in the next months will be built on our lines and will resemble, in form and shape, the cars we currently make.”
Tesla Showcases FSD in Australia & France
The company released a video showing its cars, controlled by FSD Supervised, driving on the streets of Melbourne, Australia, and Paris, France. Tesla noted that the videos were made for demonstration purposes, and "FSD (Supervised) is a hands-on feature that requires driver control of the vehicle and attention on the road at all times. Future activation and use are subject to development and regulatory approval."
Tesla Adds Chipotle President Jack Hartung to Board of Directors
Tesla welcomes Chipotle President Jack Hartung to its board of directors, who will officially assume the role on June 1, 2025. After that, Tesla's board of directors will consist of nine members. The company last added a new member in 2022, Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia. Hartung will serve on Tesla’s board audit committee. He will leave his role as president and chief strategy officer at Chipotle and move to a senior advisory role there next month.
Tesla Uses FSD Unsupervised to Move Model Ys in Giga Berlin
FSD Unsupervised is not yet approved for use on public roads, but Tesla is already using the feature extensively in its factories. We already know that cars at Giga Texas and the Fremont factory are being driven from the assembly line to the loading lots on their own, but the company is continuing to expand its use of the technology. According to a video from Giga Berlin shot by Tobias Lindh in Germany, some cars are now being driven to the distribution area without human drivers. This is the first time FSD Unsupervised has been seen in use in Europe.
Elon Musk Confirms CEO Position at Company for at Least 5 More Years
The CEO has shot down rumors that he will leave the company after a Delaware judge overturned his pay package. Musk said he will still be Tesla's CEO in five years, calming investors' potential concerns.
